Introducing 2018 Presenter-Dan Pfaff

PFAFF 2018It is with the upmost pleasure that today we announce our sixth presenter for The 2018 Seminar, ALTIS' Dan Pfaff.  Dan's extensive coaching experience in athletics across three countries provides not just the experience of success but success with athletes in a multitude of backgrounds.  From coaching multiple national championship teams and Olympians to being the curriculum director for USATF, his experience in developing high level athletes combined with his desire to push coaching forward through education makes Coach Pfaff an absolute home run of an addition to The Seminar.  We can't wait to have Dan on campus come July 20th and 21st. So, with out further ado, let's meet Dan Pfaff.

JD: If you could, please give our readers a little background information about you, what your niche in the world of athletics is, accomplishments, how you got there, education, any products you have available and/or notable publications.

DP: I am currently in my 45th year of coaching. I work in many different sports in a variety of systems and places world-wide. My primary expertise is in high performance, track and field. I started out as a high school science teacher who coached what ever sport that was in season. I worked up the ranks from GA, to first level assistant, head coach and center directorships in 3 countries.  I do a lot of consultancies in the sports medicine realm primarily with analysis of mechanics and return to play. I have been blessed to coach dozens of Olympians, World Champs qualifiers, national record holders and hundreds of athletes who are now world leaders in a variety of professional disciplines.

JD: Discuss with us the mistakes you see made by strength and conditioning coaches in the United States and around the world, and what you feel should be done differently/how to correct these issues.

DP: I think a major mistake I see in the world of S&C is poor "team player" abilities and sub-standard communication/relationship skillsets. I also see sport specific knowledge gaps and a consistent lack of sophistication in monitoring and teaching speed skills.
JD: What advice would you give a coach to improve knowledge in the lines of continuing education, meaning could you point our readers in a direction to find the scientific and practical information to improve the methods they use to improve performance?
DP: I think having a mentor or series of mentors combined with evolving a diverse, ever expanding network of gold standard individuals is the surest bet for improvement in problem solving, teaching and application excellence.
JD: If you could give a brief description of what our attendees can expect from you at The Seminar?
DP: My goal is to improve analysis, monitoring, teaching, collecting metrics, etc with the puzzle we call speed development. A secondary emphasis will be on how to use these tools in a team or game day setting.
