Episode 138-Justin Kavanaugh, Sport and Speed Institute- Sniffing Out The B.S.

“I’m a big believer in intent matters the most. We aren’t judged on our intent, we are judged on our actions, but the intention is what’s going to maintain the relationship for a long period of time. Because even if, for some reason, you’re working with somebody and it doesn’t work out, if your intention was only to help or your intention was always positive then you’ll always be able to fall back on the fact that you did right by them. Maybe the end result wasn’t what you wanted but at the end of the day you didn’t screw somebody over.”

Today we are joined by The Sport and Speed Institute’s Justin Kavanaugh to talk training, coaching, business, and filtering through the noise. After a brief intro Coach Kav breaks down how he’s built his filter and how it all started with his family and the brutal honesty of his parents, and has led to how he looks at training, relationships, and business. The conversation then leads to educating yourself and your staff and how being invested in that is exceptionally important to how you handle your athletes. We then discuss what leads to winning, and what he sees as the most important factors in winning. We then get into training and some things that he does to build buy in with athletes ranging from high school to the pros.

My Thoughts Monday #35-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-Stay Off Other People’s Lawns

“We gotta remember is there’s a chance, that that person who’s owning or running or working at that business, that gym or whatever they train people out of, they have to sell that to that kid. So, we need to understand that we need to be more open to talk to those people so we know the language they were speaking with those kids before they came to us.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss a situation that we recently had a run in with. When we are looking at the differences between the private sector (business people) and the public sector (colleges-pros-high schools) there is a a bit of tension because some people over step their bounds when making statements about what someone in the other part of the field does, and once you start to come off as threatening people grow animosity towards that part of the profession. The moral of this story is, stay off each others lawn and play nice.

Flashback Friday, The 2015 Seminar-Landon Evans, University of Iowa-Creating an Athlete

“If you’re not working together everything is going to be sub optimal, people are going to be pissed, people are going to be pointing fingers, and people are going to be asking a lot more questions going “why”.”

In 2015 we welcomed back Landon Evans to The Seminar to share with us the direction towards an athlete centered model they built. After a brief intro including his background Landon gets into nuts and bolts of the program that has evolved. This venture starts with where they were as a program in August of 2012 when Landon arrived with a conversation with the track and field staff that started with the sport coaches running their training to Landon “speaking their language” and working his way into the staff and building a relationship with sports medicine. The next step was the formulation of their sport performance group with the entire support staff to help better use their perspectives to formulate better ways of communicating with the coaches. The primary driver of the whole program is communication between the performance staff and the coaching staff with open and honest discussion.

This leads right into how they are designing training. The breakdown of weekly micro cycles and daily training is the driving force behind them moving the program forward. This includes the role of the sport coach and athlete in providing input and having autonomy provided in training. He closes discussing the role of monitoring and how they identify the who gets what and how often.

Episode 137-Nate Harvey, EliteFTS- Paying Our Dues To Get Paid What?

“From the top down it’s messed up, I mean, what other profession do you need to have a masters degree and 2 years experience to start out at 12,000 a year.”

Today we are joined by Nate Harvey of EliteFTS.com to talk about training. Nate starts out by sharing with us how he got into training at a young age, and how EliteFTS had an impact on him as an athlete, and how his voyage as a coach has led him to working for EliteFTS. We then discuss the learning experiences he has had as a coach and the importance of asking questions in all of it. This leads him into what he has been contributing, education wise, and why he’s putting things out in the modes he is. We finish off discussing different “issues” that Nate sees in the industry and how we can maybe move forward in a more positive way.

My Thoughts Monday #34-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Staying In Our Professional Lane

“You do need to stay in your lane because traffic always flows better when people aren’t going in and out of lanes, BUT you have to know what’s going on in those other lanes because if they need help in one of those lanes from you, you need to be able to change lanes and move over there to help them.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share how my thoughts on PT and rehab have changed a bit based on what I’ve been physically going through, and how understanding what your role is in any process is so important to having smoother transitions in all aspects of sport performance.

Flashback Friday 2015, Steve Magness-What is Endurance?

“It’s all about how you manipulate the constraints in the workout”

One of the things that we pride ourselves on at The Seminar is to bring in the people who are at the top of the field in their areas. So, with that in mind The 2015 Seminar we were joined by the man who wrote the book on endurance training, Steve Magness. This sixty-three-minute lecture is an evaluation and walk through of how Steve trains his distance athletes, so coaches can have a better understanding of how to develop these qualities in their athletes.

Steve starts out discussing about how we think as people, and how different types of reasoning are important when looking at how they, as distance coaches, look at training, and where the idea of stress fits into those types of reasoning and training.

Steve then breaks down what endurance is. He provides examples of where in science people see endurance and how it fits into the “real coaching world” and training. He then shares what he sees endurance is. This includes the model that he uses to create endurance and how he trains his athletes. His training is built around three questions:

1) What is the training adaptation we are looking for?
2) What stimulus leads to that adaptation?
3) How much is enough?

This leads Steve to break down how all stress plays into how he programs with his athletes, and where these stressors impact what he’s doing with training. Steve breaks down each and every aspect from their training, and the basic science and research backing it. Everything from how and why they cool down in a group and the role in socializing in it and how it impacts recovery and stress, to what workouts work when and for what. He displays how they look at techniques vs fatigue and how programming is affected by that in order to improve endurance and not just reinforce bad technique.

The last 30 minutes of this discussion is a step by step break down of how Steve programs for his athletes. This includes everything from the general “base” to building towards the race, and some different modifications he uses to help increase the stress on the athletes without “breaking” them. He shares with us multiple examples of different programs he has used for different athletes based on how they adapt and events they participate. This includes examples and reasoning of workouts and periodization for two top level performers. He also touches upon how they evaluated and altered the training for three “problem” athlete’s they had and how they altered training based on each individual “problem”. Steve closes by sharing with us how he would implement these principles with team sport athlete’s and how it can simply fit and progress with the “sport science” approach of today.

Episode 136-Andy McCloy, BCI Sport Performance and Fitness- Culture Can Come Organically

“It’s not like I’m a culture expert, I never set out to develop a cool culture. It just kind of organically happened. Where we have some of the best kids in the world, but we will put them in the same group as kids who are not even close to the same type of athlete as they are, and even in their school they’re not as social intertwined with all the cool stuff going on. I think there’s a unique dynamic there where those kids are able to socially level up. The kids that are studs are put in a position where they have to coach and mentor younger people, it’s just a really cool thing.”

Today we are joined by BCI Sport Performance and Fitness owner Andy McCloy to talk about the world of training, After a brief introduction Andy starts discussing the role of his facility in the training and development of young athletes, and how their culture has helped develop these kids in ways that have nothing to do with sports training.  We then start talking about the role of the private market trainers and where they fit in this world of athlete development in conjunction with the athletes teams staff. This includes ways he has reached out to open up those coaches and develop those relationships. This includes him breaking down how the time of the year and other training/responsibilities with other teams drives decisions to help bridge what they’re doing with what the athlete has going on with other programs and practices. Then, for the second half of the discussion Andy shares with us how he sets up his programming. This includes everything from how they find kids who fit in their program, evaluate their athletes, how those evals dictate progressions and regressions, exercise selection, and how they can easily make daily alterations.
